Fourth Annual Multi Artist Show

In this show, the studio artists at Gallery on First (which yours truly is a part of) offer 100 pieces of art for no more than $100 each.

It is a popular show that features fresh, original art at a very affordable price during the last weekend of April (26-28). The opening reception coincides with the Sanford Art Walk on Friday April 26 from 6pm to 9pm. Come visit the work of these 12 artists. Lots of variety guaranteed (watercolors, oil, acrylic, mixed media, sculptures, paper, etc...)

This is the beginning of a big series. I went to a workshop with Tracy Verdugo (check her site here), a wonderful artist from Down Under who goes around the world to spread her artistic wealth and her generous heart. If you notice a wide turn of style, you are not dreaming. Tracy and her methods have given me tools to fly on my own and free myself from just about anything I was blocked with. Just like this butterfly, I am enjoying the colors of life and using my past as a starting block for my artistic life.

Cette peinture est le début d'une longue série. J'ai fait un stage avec Tracy Verdugo (voir son site ici), une merveilleuse artiste australienne qui voyage dans le monde entier et partage ses connaissances et son coeur. Si vous remarquez un changement de direction, vous ne rêvez pas, Tracy et ses méthodes m'ont donné des ailes pour voler dans mon propre style et me libérer de tout ce qui me bloquait. Tout comme ce papillon, je profite des couleurs de ma vie et de mon passé pour me lancer dans cette aventure artistique.

Flying High is a good example of what I have been doing lately. Working in layers, I first play with inks and oil pastels to put down words, ideas, thoughts, symbols. The second layer has collages. After a certain amount of time to reflect, there is always something that comes out of the jumbles. I cover the negative and let the creature take form. Many flying creatures are born from this, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, fish :).

Haut Vol (Flying High) est un bon exemple du travail que je fais ces temps-ci. La première étape est un travail libre et instinctif. J'utilise des encres, du pastel gras pour jeter des mots, des pensées, des symboles sur la toile. Je rajoute quelques collages en seconde étape. De tout ce méli-mélo une créature prend forme, je n'ai plus qu'à en peindre l'espace négatif.

When my niece took her mother (my sister) to some sort of pilgrimage to the country of our childhood, she sent me a few pictures for me to share their experience. This painting has been inspired by a picture of some women walking in a windy and grey environment in the south of Morocco. Their body is covered in colorful and light fabrics that are such a contrast with their surroundings. What came out is this image I have from my childhood country,  full of mystery and wonder. That is why her mind is elsewhere.

Quand my nièce et sa mère (ma soeur) sont allées en "pèlerinage" dans le pays de notre enfance, elle m'a envoyé quelques photos de leur expédition dans le sud du Maroc. Cette toile est inspirée d'une de ces photos, deux jeunes femmes dans un  environnement gris et venteux, recouvertes de tissus légers et colorés qui contrastent tant avec ce qui les entoure. La peinture qui en est sortie est plutôt une image qui me reste de ce pays, plein de mystère et d'émerveillement, ce qui explique que "her mind is elsewhere" (son esprit soit ailleurs).

Doodles

Traveling season is upon me for this month and the next 2. I am hoping to keep on publishing paintings, new and old. Here is part of a series of work done a summer past. I am very attached to these doodles. Don't ask me why, I don't know. I just like doing them, I like looking at them. I get sentimental because I lost my first sketchbook with what I consider my best doodles.

La saison des voyages arrive. J'espère arriver à publier des peintures, nouvelles et anciennes. Voici deux exemples d' une série faite un été passé. Je suis très attachée à ces "doodles". Pourquoi? Je n'en sais rien. J'aime les dessiner, j'aime les regarder. Suis-je sentimentale parce que j'ai perdu mon premier cahier de sketches? Peut-être.

At some point, I mixed my graphite doodles with watercolor. It worked for some.

Un jour, j'ai ajouté de l'aquarelle. Pour certains, ça marche.

I started my doodles during the long and dark hours at the museum. I always start with a small geometrical shape, a circle, a square, a triangle, a button and then I let the pencil play around. I never know what will come out of it. It is always a surprise. I suppose that they were expressing my desire to fly away from the lightless and coldness of the place. For some reason, they put a smile on my face when I look at them now.

J'ai commencé cette série lors de mes longues heures noires au musée. Je commence toujours par dessiner une petite forme géométrique, un cercle, un carré, un triangle, un bouton, puis je laisse le crayon jouer sur le papier. Je n'ai jamais d'idée précise en tête et suis toujours surprise par le résultat totalement inattendu. Je suppose que j'exprimais ainsi mon désir d'envol de ce coin froid et sans lumière. Pour une raison ou pour une autre, je souris quand je les regarde.

Then, I added them on my paintings. The one above was added on masa paper collaged on canvas. The doodle is the principal subject of the painting, the lamp is showing the way I need to follow. My more recent work has many layers and if you look at the last painting, you might see some of my old doodles in the background.

Puis, je me suis mise à les ajouter dans mes peintures. Celle ci-dessus a comme objet principal la lampe qui me montre le chemin.  Mais dans mon travail plus récent, ci-dessous, ils sont plus cachés dans le décor.
